Finley Regional Care has created a gym thoughtfully designed in consultation with Ben Doyle from Proactive Physiotherapy.
Exercise is one of the most important activities to maintain independence in older adults and with the changes to the Government Aged Care Funding model we have taken the opportunity to create a space dedicated to exercise in a supported environment. Benefits of exercise have been widely studied and include improved strength, flexibility, bone density, sleep, cognitive function, weight management and confidence, and reduced anxiety, depression, falls and health conditions.
The new gym is based in Rose Cottage, and FRC residents are now enjoying their own personalised exercise program that has been created for them by one of our physiotherapy team.
Each resident can track their own progress as they work through each exercise with the aim to maintain and increase mobility, strength, balance and reduce falls risk. To ensure residents stay hydrated during their gym sessions each resident who participates in the program has been given their own FRC ‘Gym Junkie’ water bottle.
I would like to thank all of our residents who are participating in the gym program for being so enthusiastic in trying something new, and also to our Physiotherapy team for helping us to make this idea a reality.
